RNC Legal Issues
Part 1: Search Warrants
Part 1 of Smoove's discussion of legal issues surrounding protests at the 2008 Republican National Convention in St. Paul, Minnesota addresses the issue of search warrants. Prior to the convention, search warrants were used to confiscate property from protestors. Smoove pulls one of the warrants off of the web and examines it for legal defects.
Part 2: The Arrest of Amy Goodman
In Part 2, Smoove discusses the probable cause requirement in the context of arrests. He got a copy of the law under which Amy Goodman was arrested at the RNC in St. Paul, MN. He analyzes the situation to see if it was legal under the constitution.
Part 3: Brutality Insurance
Smoove is disturbed by the idea that the Republican Host Committee was allowed to insure the city of St. Paul against police brutality lawsuits. This trick may have allowed the Ramsey County Sheriff's department to get away with ten million dollars worth of brutality with no consequences.
